How to Help the Homeless

1. Be prepared.

Anticipate the opportunity and be ready to help.

2. Acknowledge them.

One of the most effective ways to help is to simply acknowledge the man or woman as a human being. To the man or woman who’s homeless, just saying “hello” goes a long way. And you can take it one step further: Try talking to them. If the situation is safe, take a little extra time and engage in a conversation.

3. Don’t give money.

While intentions are good, the money you may give typically goes for something you probably don’t want to support such as a drug or alcohol habit. So if money isn’t usually the best option what should you do?

4. Offer an alternative.

Something tangible. You can provide for their needs with things like clean socks, toilet paper, soap, granola bars, water bottles, a bus ticket or a gift certificate at a fast food restaurant. You can also direct them to any of our locations here at Miracle Hill Ministries to discuss their options.

5. Become an advocate.

We encourage you to become a voice for the homeless by volunteering your time, by becoming a church or business partner, by financially supporting Miracle Hill Ministries, and by praying…praying for our staff and for those we serve each day.  By becoming an advocate for the homeless in Upstate South Carolina, you help meet both the physical and spiritual needs of our most vulnerable neighbors.
